Different devices contain different software to operate, including the software used to present information to a user. This software is collectively called the Operating System. In order for applications to work on a particular device they have to interact correctly with the Operating System software.
Operating System software is usually given a name and segmented by version number or edition. In general the larger a version number is the later in time that version was released. Usually a later version is compatible with an earlier version, it just has additional features. Sometimes, as is the case with both S60 and UIQ, compatibility with earlier versions cannot be maintained due to the nature of the additional features that have been introduced.
